he cast is celebrating an actual milestone—this marks this point when more episodes were recorded on GatheringMagic than not. To help celebrate, the usual gang of miscreants is joined by GatheringMagic’s Con-tent Manager and Head Honcho Adam Styborski (@the_stybs). With price spikes and new card borders to discuss, the gang gets down to business and ships you all the content you can handle in an hour without having to contact poison control about a value overdose. Whose Pick of the Week is the boldest proclamation? Whose is the most controver-sial? Who actually likes the new card border? How many awkward silences are possible? Find out the answer to all these questions and more on an episode of your favorite podcast that will have you asking, “When did Standard become fun again?” Join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • How does Adam Styborski feel about the Commander decks?
  • Someone likes the new card borders. Can you guess who?
  • Are the new card borders necessary? Perhaps so, with convincing Chinese counterfeits spotted.
  • Is the Magic Online community toxic? How have other games fixed their toxic communities?
  • Pick of the Week is contentious this week. Find out how.
  • What do we have to look forward to from Born of the Gods?
  • Stybs talks a bit about himself and his Magic career so far.
  • What was the deal with Genesis Wave?
  • If you are artistically inclined, the best Photoshop or alteration of either the video of Corbin hitting the light pole or a still frame from it wins a prize. Send entries to brainstormbrew at gmail dot com. We will extend the contest a little bit longer. Please enter.

    Dear Brewery Boys,

I’m a long-time Magic player (we’re talking 1990s here) and been listening to your podcast for about a year now. First off, good job – you have a good mix of personalities and talent that make an enjoyable podcast. Unlike certain other podcasts I could name, you folks deliver original content, not “Stuff I Just Read On Rosewater’s Twitter Account: The Podcast.” So, good job there.

I’m writing because you guys touched a nerve during Podcast 81. It’s the same nerve that Jason Alt hit with his article about sheep getting slaughtered over at Quiet Speculation. The nerve is this: speculators sitting back and determining that everyone that buys after a price spike has started are: (a) greedy speculators themselves and (b) not as smart or timely as the speculator making the critique. This, in my view, is a totally false assumption about what is actually going on for a good chunk of the people who are buying cards at that time.

What’s actually happening — at least for some people — is that people who want the cards purely to play with are having to move because they see some force (“professional” speculation being the usual boogeyman) driving the cost up and they don’t want to get price locked out of the card. I’ll use myself as an example. I stopped playing around Urza’s for awhile, and when I got back in, I found many sets where I had to pick up singles to flesh out my collection. This was in 2007 or so. I browsed the sets I missed, and was able to grab lots of playsets of potentially interesting cards for my own use for reasonable prices. My goal is just to have playsets of interesting cards for casual decks, rogue decks in eternal formats, and cube.

Sometime after 2010, I don’t remember when, it feels like the speculator culture began to take over. This, combined with Star City Games’ amazing ability to figure out what people will pay for a card, and Modern, led to prices starting to climb to astronomical heights. It became apparent to me that I had to pay very close attention to what folks in your community were saying and doing about cards. not because I had any interest in playing the Magic Stocks, but because if I wanted to continue to grow my collection while paying something like a reasonable price, I would have to know what the speculators were doing.

So, I listen to your podcast, I read Quiet Speculation, and otherwise pay attention to the market.. Fist of Suns was a recent example of something that I noticed was generating buzz and so I grabbed a playset for personal use under three dollars, which was already too much, because it appeared that the card was going to pop up into the five dollar range or above.. Lo and behold, now it’s pushing 4 – 7 on TCPlayer. This is ridiculous, but it’s reality, and it is hardly the first time it has happened that way. Even worse, once a card goes up to a certain range, it gains inertia and doesn’t come down for a long time. Heck, look at Baneslayer Angel – still over ten bucks. I’m not talking about moving a buck or two, I’m talking about moving between “ranges” of costs. You know, from bulk, to a buck, to five bucks, etc.

So, before you paint purchasers with the greedy brush, remember that many of us simply want to collect all the interesting cards, we do so over time, and we have to react to the new realities of finance if we want to avoid being priced out of a certain card. Not everyone treats Magic cards like a stock market.

    Great Ep Guys.

As a graduating Digital Media Communications major, the Adam Styborski point of view was a great addition from not only a marketing standpoint but also from a brand building standpoint.

Keep up the great work and congrats on the “Longest Home” achievement with Gathering Magic.
