Forced Fruition Episode 3: Down the Drain

Today’s Lesson

The third installment of Forced Fruition takes us on a journey of discovery and trying to slow roll our way to victory. In this BNG-THS-THS draft, a theme of slowly draining our opponent quickly develops out of pack one. We employ some drafting strategy to fill out the rest of our deck in packs two and three. I’ll let you be the judge of how well it works in the matches, but either way, I’m very happy to be able to bring you this episode.

What Did We Learn?

Overall, the drain plan proved to be too slow versus some of the more aggressive decks (a.k.a. most good decks in any Draft format). Going all-in on [card]Servant of Tymaret[/card] and [card]Scholar of Athreos[/card] was a bit overkill. I still believe that Scholar is a fantastic card and any deck that’s running white should play it and just throw a swamp or two in the manabase for the eventuality of a stalled board. Other things I would have done differently include putting [card]Bronze Sable[/card] in my main deck over [card]Felhide Brawler[/card].

The [card]divine verdict[/card] (I’m going to chalk not putting that one in the maindeck due to a [card]memory lapse[/card]) on this archetype is: don’t go too hard or you’ll find yourself drowned in sorrow.

no offense but this guy doesn’t know how to draft.

P1P1: Retraction Helix is the clear best card here and an easy pick, those red cards other than Temper are bad.
P1P3: Sudden Storm is the pick, your in neither Red or Green, Storm is easily splashable

Kinda just stopped watching after that. Your logic on a lot of stuff makes little sense and your idea of passing signals because of passing a Temple of Enlightenment makes no sense.

    1. Andrew Cochran says:

I make no claims about being a good drafter, learning to do so is actually a huge part of starting this series. The signal for pack 1 was not passing a temple, rather not passing a single black card. Since you didn’t see the rest of the draft you won’t see that we actually get past a lot of quality black later on. Was it the most correct choice? Probably not but we learned something from our experiences.

Thank you for your feedback, I”m still familiarizing myself with a lot of the Born cards, I’ll do my best to know how to identify the powerful cards going forward.

        thanks for the reply.

I don’t think cutting black in P1P1 is worth it even by taking Servant. I do usually agree with cutting a color if the decision between two picks is close. However in this case Retraction Helix is so much stronger than Servant cutting black gives you a lot weaker of a card.

Black is also a really weak color in Born of the Gods. The fact you got passed a lot of good black could just be because black is a bad color in BotG and nobody picked it rather than you cutting black for Servant.
