Brainstorm Brewery #84 – The Greatest Fool of All

We don’t mean to spend so much time talking about Reddit even though so much happened this week that we really feel like we have to. We’ve got spoilers, spoilers, spoilers! The gang talks about more than three cards, but I didn’t want to keep writing “spoilers”. Here’s another spoiler – you only have one week to enter our photoshop contest before it’s all over. Corbin embraces the suck and does an IAMA on Reddit, answering questions about finance for three hours and trying to set the record straight. Finance subreddit subscriptions near 4,000 – is this influx of enthusiasts affecting the market adversely? How do they feel about counterfeits? How do you? These questions are addressed and all things finance are discussed in one of the strongest episodes yet. Are these new fakes out of China a lethal threat to the game? Is Reddit? Is there any stopping the game at this point? Find out the answers to all these questions and more on a no-holds-barred episode of your favorite podcast that will leave you asking “What holds could you reasonably bar anyway? Holding Mutavaults? I thought you said to sell those”. This is Brainstorm Brewery.

  • Jason wrote a critical piece that wasn’t received as badly as we thought it might.
  • Ryan has some knowledge that gives the Chinese fake scandal some much needed perspective
  • Picks of the Week is super sized as always as the gang adds a new category
  • Is Reddit really changing the face of speculation?
  • How do you identify when you should buy during a spike?
  • Spoilers are here- who’s excited and who isn’t?
  • Wow, they reprinted Dark Confidant! Or did they?
  • Will the new demigods impact play?
  • How cool is this?
  • You have one more week to enter the photoshop contest. Winners announced next week.

Brainstorm Brewery #83 – Gathering of Magi

he cast is celebrating an actual milestone—this marks this point when more episodes were recorded on GatheringMagic than not. To help celebrate, the usual gang of miscreants is joined by GatheringMagic’s Con-tent Manager and Head Honcho Adam Styborski (@the_stybs). With price spikes and new card borders to discuss, the gang gets down to business and ships you all the content you can handle in an hour without having to contact poison control about a value overdose. Whose Pick of the Week is the boldest proclamation? Whose is the most controver-sial? Who actually likes the new card border? How many awkward silences are possible? Find out the answer to all these questions and more on an episode of your favorite podcast that will have you asking, “When did Standard become fun again?” Join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • How does Adam Styborski feel about the Commander decks?
  • Someone likes the new card borders. Can you guess who?
  • Are the new card borders necessary? Perhaps so, with convincing Chinese counterfeits spotted.
  • Is the Magic Online community toxic? How have other games fixed their toxic communities?
  • Pick of the Week is contentious this week. Find out how.
  • What do we have to look forward to from Born of the Gods?
  • Stybs talks a bit about himself and his Magic career so far.
  • What was the deal with Genesis Wave?
  • If you are artistically inclined, the best Photoshop or alteration of either the video of Corbin hitting the light pole or a still frame from it wins a prize. Send entries to brainstormbrew at gmail dot com. We will extend the contest a little bit longer. Please enter.
  • Want to be part of the Brainstorm Brewery Team? If you can write, stream, or Photoshop, or if you have a keen eye for design, contact altjason17 at gmail dot com to find out how you can join the fastest-growing brand in Magic.

MtG After Hours #9 – EDH World Problems

This week’s episode comes from episode 83 of Brainstorm Brewery with guest host Adam Styborski (@the_stybs).  Jason and Corbin inquire about how to make a fun yet powerful EDH deck.  Corbin gives his reasons for playing Combo elements in his decks.  Jason is still looking to find the perect 75% EDH deck.  Adam see red about a new commander, wishing it would go away is being kind.

Brainstorm Brewery #82 – 2013 Retrospective

2013 is in our rearview mirrors, and what a year it was. There were a lot of financially-relevant happenings in the year gone by, and the gang reminisces. What happened in 2013, and how can that help us look at 2014? What will we be ready for when history repeats itself? Tune in for a rundown of a year’s worth of financial news and all of your favorite inside gags—as well as the announcement of contest winners. Who baits Jason with a bad chemistry reference? Who is on the receiving end of some computer trash talk? More importantly, who won some fabulous prizes for helping out the cast? Find out the answer to all of these questions and more on an extra-large episode of your favorite Magic podcast that will leave you asking, “Why do they keep talking about Aluren?” This is Brainstorm Brewery.

  • StarCityGames had an announcement that impacted the future of Legacy. But how?
  • The banning of Bloodbraid Elf warped Modern.
  • Will players ever want to “pimp out” their Modern decks?
  • How did the increase in Magic Online redemption prices affect redemption?
  • The face of GPs changed this year—in some ways you might not have considered.
  • What do we do with a set like Dragon’s Maze?
  • What does the gang mean by “Aluren?”
  • Mutavault is discussed at length
  • What are the gang’s thoughts on Theros after a while to adjust?
  • What will the economics of From the Vault: Twenty look like in 2014?
  • Commander (2013 Edition) had a big impact. But how?
  • San Diego Comic-Con planeswalkers were a game changer.
  • What was the “MODOpocalypse”?
  • If you didn’t click this link before, don’t click it now.
  • What did Brainstorm Brewery accomplish as a brand in 2013? What does 2014 look like?
  • Shout outs go a bit long
  • Bet you can’t watch it just once.
  • If you are artistically inclined, the best Photoshop or alteration of either the video of Corbin hitting the light pole or a still frame from it wins a prize. Send entries to brainstormbrew at gmail dot com.

Brainstorm Brewery #81 – Armchair Speculation

What do you do when a Travis Woo brew does the voodoo that a Woo brew do? That’s one of the questions on everyone’s minds this week as a card in Modern quintuples up overnight. Who’s buying these cards between $2 and $10? Is it a good buy at $10 anticipating $20? Should those of us with copies hold? This is becoming a regular occurrence lately and it’s hard to know what to do but the gang weighs in and substitutes a few better choices to make. Get ready to cringe as Corbin is grievously injured for your amusement and cringe harder when he regales you with how he spent his recovery period. Hear more conspiracy theories about the meaning behind “Born of the Gods” and how multicolored gods might be dealt with. Three quarters of the gang feels out of their depth discussing Magic Online prices, someone is still clicking cookies and it was apparently not certain the cast would even get recorded this time. Strap in for a bumpy ride on your favorite Magic podcast that will have you asking “How many weeks in a row are they going to mention Soldier of the Pantheon?”

  • The cast starts as all good casts do, with a discussion of something silly from Reddit that apparently isn’t as controversial as one of the hosts thought.
  • Pick of the Week is all solid info spanning multiple formats and platforms. It isn’t to be missed.
  • Marcel has a question about what to do about a card that has hit a record high on MTGO. The gang weighs in.
  • Is Disrupting Shoal a Splinter Twin or an Aluren?
  • What is the hashtag #OKinepts for?
  • Seriously, watch this again. You can actually hear a loud metal pinging sound.
  • If you are artistically inclined, the best photoshop or alteration of either the video of “Corbin Hits a Light Pole” or a still frame from it wins a prize. Send entries to [email protected]

MtG After Hours #6 – Twitter Pissing Contest

This week’s episode is from episode 82 of Brainstorm Brewery.  The Brew Crew discusses the merits of Twitter and dive into the nitty gritty like how much is a fake Russian follower worth?  Jason name-drops Jeff Hoogland again in hopes to ride his coattails.  Ryan comes up with a new hashtag destined to go viral; #OKinepts.  Yes, it’s pure debauchery!

Brainstorm Brewery #80 – Sticking Your Neck Out

The cast turns eighty, which is old enough to drive a car into a farmer’s market and blame it on the floor mat. This episode starts with a bang—do financiers tend to hedge their bets because they’re afraid to be wrong? It doesn’t let up, as the gang goes down a laundry list of finance trends and happenings as well as some discussion of the evolving Standard format. Which price spike this week was a classic Aluren scenario? Who’s going the broadest with his Pick of the Week? What should you do when an old block becomes available for Magic Online Draft? Find out the answer to all these questions and more, including a listener-submitted trade proposal that the gang seems genuinely split on. Join us for another hour of your favorite Magic podcast that will have you asking, “Promo Priest of Titania is worth how much!?” This is Brainstorm Brewery.

  • An old sore subject is a good jumping-off point for a discussion about hedging from the finance community. What responsibility does the finance-writing community owe its readership, and what should the readers demand? Are writers too afraid to be wrong? Is it impossible to cover every contingency?
  • A Modern card went up and is already back down again following a brief frenzy seemingly backed by no demand. How do we know if a price spike is the genuine article? What are some quick ways to mentally check yourself at checkout?
  • All roads lead to and from Pick of the Week, as selling tips for TCGplayer, old cards whose prices we thought were set in stone, and the future openness of the Standard format are all discussed. You won’t want to miss a second.
  • A listener sends in a letter proposing a trade. Which side do you want to be on? The gang weighs the pros and cons.
  • Magic Online is seeing Modern Masters Drafts for a limited time. The gang dispenses valuable advice.
  • Is the podcast not enough of a finance fix? Check out the articles at the cast’s own website or spend some time on Reddit so you don’t miss a thing.

MtG After Hours #5 – Technologically Inept

This weeks episode is from episode 81 of Brainstorm Brewery.  Listen to Ryan moan and groan his way to publishing his first article on BrainstormBrewery.com. MtG After Hours #4 – Foot in the Mouth

This weeks episode is a throwback from episode 39 of Brainstorm Brewery.  As usual a whole podcast was recorded before they recorded the actual podcast.  Only this time some of the pregame made the cut, while the rest can never be released to the public. :P  You also get to hear about the infamous Fogo bets.

Brainstorm Brewery #79 – How the Cookie Crumbles

Some big news in the world of Magic Online has broken and everyone is wondering how the market will be affected. Has Wizards finally gotten it together and fixed the MODO problem? Does any of the gang have confidence in MODO going forward? How do we respond to sudden price spikes in Modern and Legacy staples and what constitutes a spike? This episode is all value wall to wall as the gang delves into some controversial topics. But are they a little too distracted this week? Who is responsible for the distraction? Find out the answer to all these questions and more in a jam-packed episode of your favorite Magic podcast that will leave you asking “What’s so dangerous about just clicking a link?” Join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • The episode almost doesn’t get off the ground when Jason furnishes everyone with A LINK YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT CLICK
  • It’s a Pick of the Week extravaganza as someone picks 99 cards. Someone has to mute their mic a second and when their pants are down, their pick gets stolen. Who is the thief? Listen to find out!
  • The winner of the drawing will be announced NEXT WEEK, and all other entrants will be sent their consolation prizes. Stay tuned for the announcement on a future episode.
  • What constitutes a spike? What role do speculators play? How do you know a spike is sustainable? The gang weighs in on a controversial subject that is not as well understood as they may have thought.
  • MODO is fixed! (?) With Daily Events returning very soon, how will market prices be affected? Is there still time to buy in?

Brainstorm Brewery #78 – Apparently Sesquicentennial Means 150

Not a whole lot happened in the last week outside of a temporary decline in MODO prices brought on by the unscheduled maintenance and a lack of confidence in the long-term viability of MODO, but prices have already returned to normal mostly. The gang doesn’t want to take any of that out on you and manages to find quite a bit to talk about instead of resorting to a guest appearance or a gimmick to cope with the down time. Making like they’re employees at a Build-A-Bear workshop and your head is the limp, empty shell of some manner of stuffed animal and sweet nuggets of financial goodness are the stuffing, you’re going to get some wisdom piped into your dome whether you signed up for it or not. With questions about the viability of Legacy staples as long-term holds, financial opportunities in unexpected places and the sky falling on MODO, this won’t feel like an off week at all. It will feel like the boys are taking you to school.

  • MODO prices tanked briefly but seem to have stabilized for the most part. Is there still opportunity here? What could be causing the prices to come back up?
  • Pick of the Week covers all formats this week and deals with prices that make no sense.
  • The winner of the drawing will be announced soon, and all other entrants will be sent their consolation prizes. Stay tuned for the announcement on a future episode.
  • The T-shirts were printed this week. Thank you to all who supported the cast. Future merch is announced.
  • A Legacy Grand Prix happened in DC over the weekend. What was exciting about it?
  • Some Legacy cards appear to be going down and some going up. What should you do if you’re looking to invest? The gang presents several opinions.

Brainstorm Brewery #77 – If It’s Broke, Don’t Fix It

The cast is interrupted by breaking news- Magic Online events have been suspended so the whole system can be fixed. In the wake of the disastrous weekend where the MOCS and a PTQ both crashed on MODO the community reacted badly- will the backlash from taking MODO down to fix it be worse? The cast is in rare form tonight, and there is a lot to talk about. Could a lack of faith in MODO create buying opportunity? And with Merfolk in general and one Merfolk in particular looking dominant, what is the play with Commander decks? Which cast member gets his own percussion section background music? Who has a hard time taking a compliment (It’s not who you think)? Who gets blindsided by pick of the week despite going last? Find out the answer to all these questions and more on a valuetastic episode of your favorite Podcast that will have you asking “When did they get a website?” Join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • MODO went down f or maintenance and the community is flipping out. Is there opportunity here? Would they complain regardless?
  • It’s a Pick of the Week explosion as the gang gives solid advice on history repeating itself.
  • The winner of the drawing will be announced soon, and all other entrants will be sent their consolation prizes. Stay tuned for the announcement on a future episode.
  • A listener sends in a dense letter and the gang tries to get to all of it. So many good questions, so little time.

Brainstorm Brewery #76 – Going Infinite

The Brew Crew is joined by streaming savant Kenji Egashira (@NumotTheNummy) to talk about all things MODO- bankroll management, streaming, Theros draft archetypes and the dream of going infinite. Kenji was a member of this year’s winning Community Cup team and comes with some stories to tell about his experiences in Seattle. The gang goes deep on a MODO discussion that has a few people toying with the idea of giving MODO a serious try. Are you a total MODO novice? So new that you don’t even know why Magic Online is called MODO? This is the cast for you. Even if you’re an old veteran of Magic Online you’ll get a lot out of this episode. Who rage quit MODO 3 years ago and hasn’t been back since? Whose new article series is going to take everyone through a day in the life of a MODO virgin? Who knew “playing Solitaire” was a euphemism? Who is going to think twice about playing Tetris next time around? Find out the answer to all these questions and more on a jam-packed episode of your favorite Magic Podcast that will have you asking “Didn’t they play something called “What’s it Worth? a long time ago?” This is Brainstorm Brewery.

  • Kenji Egashira (@NumotTheNummy) joins us to talk about his famous twitch stream as well as all manner of MODO-related goodness.
  • It’s a Pick of the Week extravaganza as someone picks an entire set. This may be the largest number of Picks of the Week ever, and right after they finally compiled all of the historical pick data!
  • The winner of the drawing will be announced soon, and all other entrants will be sent their consolation prizes. Stay tuned for the announcement on a future episode.

Brainstorm Brewery #75 – Sesquicentennial

Brainstorm Brewery turns 75 this week and shows no signs of pumping the brakes. You shouldn’t pump your brakes, anyway- most cars these days have ABS and you’re not doing anyone any good. This episode is a back-to-basics, no-nonsense cast that is short on dilly-dallying and long on both values and hyphens. With a few brews, both of the alcohol and deck variety, a fan letter, some discussion about what to do with upcoming product and some killer picks of the week, there’s more value here than you can haul off in a cloth bag with a dollar sign on the side. Who doesn’t know the name of their own general? Who suggested that it was reasonable to cut card draw from an aggro deck? Who watched too much Jeopardy this week because their Pick of the Week comes in question form? You’ll find out the answer to all these questions and more. Sit back, pour your favorite brew and kick your feet up because you’re about to get both barrels with this installment of your favorite finance podcast that will have you asking “What DO you cut from Merfolk to make room for True Name Nemsis?” Join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • You wanted a chance to own a Tee with the logo on the front. Buy our merch and help support your favorite podcast.
  • Pick of the Week goes deep this week and you may learn how to evaluate the MODO market a little better if you didn’t already. Does it always translate to paper? Is Merfolk going to be a contender in Legacy? What is poised to go up? Find out!
  • What should you do with Commander decks? The answer may surprise you, looking at historical trends.
  • True to their word, the gang keeps their commitment to read one fan letter a week. Want yours read on the cast? Hit up [email protected] !
  • There is a newer offering coming to Brainstormbrewery.com and it may be relevant to your interests. Find out what it is!

Brainstorm Brewery #74 – Mailbagstravaganza

It’s a comedy of errors as the gang deals with a series of unfortunate events that all conspired to make sure an episode wasn’t recorded this week. Deciding to save some of the headier topics for another week, the gang digs into a mailbag backlog and finds some great topics. E-mails ranged from timely topics to requests for general advice to requests that Corbin acquire a microphone that picks up his voice as well as it picks up his ice cream-related exploits. The Rate My Trade segment is announced as a regular segment in a big way with the gang tackling several proposed trades and giving their analyses. You wanted another mailbag episode, and you got it. If you’d like your e-mail read on the cast and your name’s pronunciation butchered by Ryan or Marcel, send in a question or a trade you recently completed to brainstormbrew at gmail dot com. How do you evaluate a trade that is straight-across in value? How does the Magic Online market differ? Find out the answers to all these questions and more in a listener-mail episode that will rival the exactly one other time the gang did an episode like this. Join us for “Mailbag 2: Electric Mail Boogaloo” on your favorite Magic podcast that will have you saying, “Why’d they read that guy’s e-mail and not mine?” This is Brainstorm Brewery.

  • The new Commander preconstructed decks are jimmy-jammed with value. What should your investment strategy be?
  • E-mails, e-mails, e-mails. So many were read, and so many more remain to be read. Keep them coming!
  • The gang evaluates some trades. If you want yours evaluated, e-mail in a list of all the cards involved and remember not to tell on which side of the trade you were so you don’t bias the decision.
  • Want to write for the site? E-mail brainstormbrew at gmail dot com! A ton of great submissions have gone up already, and a lot are from Brainstorm Brew Crew members just like yourself. You could be the next great discovery!

Brainstorm Brewery #73 – Ray Current Pro

Raymond “@RayFuturePro” Perez is going to need a new nickname after finishing an astonishing eleventh place at the Pro Tour in Dublin, netting $5,000, an invite to Valencia, and a spot on Team Brainstorm Brewery. Back again to regale the gang with tales of the Pro Tour, muse about the future of splashy weekend decks, and give some analysis in the form of Picks of the Week, this is one episode you won’t want to miss. A contentious topic for the finance community also broached in this episode, this will be one for the history books. What should be done about stores that cancel card orders after cards spike? How do you beat the best decks from the Pro Tour? Who has decided to jump into Magic Online finance in a big way? Find out the answer to all these questions and more on a jimmy-jam-packed episode of your favorite podcast that will leave you feeling like you ingested so much value you’ll explode like the guy in that Monty Python sketch. Join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • Raymond Perez “@rayfuturepro”, drops by to talk all about the Pro Tour in Dublin.
  • What are the ethical issues surrounding canceled card orders? How should the community deal with shops that cancel or alter orders when cards spike? The gang weighs in, and the discussion grows heated. You’d swear they weren’t all agreeing with each other.
  • Pick of the Week is nutty, as way more than five cards are discussed. There were a lot of cards that spiked over the weekend, what should you do with them? Can the difference between Magic Online and paper sometimes lead to poor decisions? If you misevaluate a card but don’t lose money, should you consider it a miss? The gang goes fully down the rabbit hole.
  • Ray recounts his experience in Dublin and talks about his matchups, his preparation, and even his breakfast. You won?t want to miss a word of this story or of his article on Brainstormbrewery.com.

Brainstorm Brewery #72 – Inside the Matty Studio

It’s a mini Meavy Meta meetup! Matthew Bartholomew Beverly (Total guess on the middle name, but tease him as though that?s accurate) a.k.a @MattyStudios drops by to talk finance both of the paper and MODO variety. The gang talks about movers in Theros and other Standard-legal sets, good online resources for tracking prices and Matty only has to be reminded that he’s a guest and not the actual host of the podcast two or three times. It’s like the Vegas extravaganza Meavy Meta episode all over again only way more coherent. Somewhat ironically, this may be one of the most finance-focused casts the gang has ever managed. Whether he likes it or not, Matty is quickly becoming a go-to guy for MODO finance information and he talks all about how he decided he wanted to step his game up and all of the techniques he employed to get there. Maybe the rest of the cast will follow suit and not leave it all to Marcel. So who is conspicuously absent from this installment? Who makes a bold prediction about a card that may be the “new Huntmaster?” Find out the answer to all these questions and more on the Meaviest episode yet that will have you saying “Mama MIA, that’s a spicy meatball!” because you say stuff like that, now- join us for Brainstorm Brewery.

  • Matthew Beverly a.k.a. @MattyStudios drops by to talk MODO finance and the surprises from the first two weeks of legality.
  • The gang wants to do a new running segment where they evaluate a trade you were part of. Send a list of the cards involved in the trade to [email protected] to get their feedback and have your name read on the cast. Some light mockery is a possibility if the trade was lopsided or your name is silly.
  • Interested in contributing to Brainstormbrewery.com as a writer or editor? Submit your credentials to [email protected].
  • “What’s it Worth?” contains a very nice mix of MODO and paper picks, and as usual they don’t try to limit themselves to four picks. Enjoy all the value, you lucky so and so.
